INTERVIEWER
You once wrote: “On an existential level, I’m a total
dissenter. My deep distrust of all historical societies leads
me toward a kind of apocalyptic anarchy.”
What kind of world do you dream of?
PIER PAOLO PASOLINI
For a while, when I was young, I believed in revolution,
just like young people do today. Now I believe in it a little
less, so I don’t really trust in those kinds of rebirths
anymore.
At this point, I feel apocalyptic: I see a world in front of
me that is painful and getting uglier all the time. I have no
hope, so I don’t even imagine a future world.
The word hope has completely disappeared from my
vocabulary.
So I keep fighting for small, partial truths, moment by
moment, hour by hour, month by month, but I don’t
make long-term plans anymore, because I no longer
believe in them.
I no longer hold on to those kinds of hopes that only serve
as excuses.
